This is a horrible question. To actually *CHANGE* the priority you have to tick the box, if you merely change the priority without ticking it then the order is ignored (ie if you click OK and then go back in it will have reverted). So as asked, if you move the server up then the answer is "No". If the question says you change the priority then "Yes" because to actually change the priority you have to tick it! Of course equally it won't fail over to Server1 as there is no Preferred Owner but that doesn't fulfil the requirement of *Ensuring* it doesn't fail over!

You can't move the server up without ticking the box. ticking the box is implied.

Tested this in home lab, you CAN move the servers in preferred owner WITHOUT ticking the box

When nodes are not selected, and you attempt to move Server 2 up, it will revert to the default order (Server 1 on top and Server 2 at the bottom) once you click Apply and OK. Answere is No

Failback never occurs automatically. There must be a reason. Priority is not important in this case. Any incident that affects Server2, and according to the values in the Failover tab, or force majeure, will cause it to fail over to Server1. Only "Prevent failback" or Pause Server1 in Cluster would prevent it.

Answer is NO, because simply moving Server2 up without checking the box will not ensure that App1 continues to run on Server2 when Server1 is restarted. Preferred Owner is "any node". B. No.

without any of the 'Preferred Owners' nodes checkbox selected (ticked), the cluster roles Preferred Owners mode is 'Any Mode' and no preference to the order will be applied. Once any node is selected (checkbox ticked) the overall cluster roles Preferred Owners mode changes to 'User Settings' where the user selected preferred order will be applied. This is demonstrated very well in the following demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0H7QsSmQW8&t=13s

Based on the exhibit as presented, the answer is B as the servers are not ticked and they have to be both to be moved and to apply. Exhibits are not supposed to require any implications. If I picked B and was told I was wrong, I would dispute this question.

I would say Yes since you are setting Server2 as the preferred owner

The tick is to choose which server to press "move up" and "move down". Lol, funny explanation attempt though.

You can move nodes up and down without ticking them but it will not save the order of nodes that are not ticked.

A) Checking the box or not, Server 2 is still at the top. More Info: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/failover-clustering/preferred-owners-in-a-cluster/ba-p/371290 The key point I want to make is that, when you set the preferred owners for a group to a subset of the nodes in a cluster, you’re not saying “I want the group to failover only to these nodes”. What you’re effectively saying is, “please reorder the nodes such that these are at the front of the list.” The rest of the cluster nodes will be appended to the list, and the group will still failover to every node in the cluster before going back to the first node in the preferred owners list.

You have to check the box for the node to stay in the position on the list you chose for it.

Video mentioned by GoforIT21 shows ticking and moving to top of list. Which is confirmed by help, and says that server must be ticked. Select nodes from the list, and then use the buttons to list them in order. If you want this service or application to be moved to a particular node whenever that node is available: Select the check box for a node and use the buttons to place it at the top of the list. On the Failover tab, ensure that failback is allowed for this service or application.

In order to move Server 2 up, you must tick it first.

According to exibit, it seems, that it's already running on Server2, so it shouldn't failover to Server1, when it comes up. There is no prefered owner selected, so it should remain on Server2 anyway. It's a bit confusing.

Exactly! I don't see anything that would need to be done to prevent App1 from switching to Server1, there's no setting that makes Server1 the preferred server...

I think by now that something does need to be configured - and actually, I think that moving server2 up the preferred owner list is necessary to keep the workload there. Marking a server on the list is only a way to select it in order to use the buttons to move it up or down. (Not more than one server can be selected.) Therefore, the fact that none of the boxes are checked does not mean that the order of preferred owners is not active.

If you only move Server2 to first position in Preferred Owner frame without selecting them and close Failover Cluster Manager console and open it again Server2 come back to second position. One can set order of nodes only for selected ones (set as Preferred Owners). Other nodes keeps order of its adding to cluster https://learn.microsoft.com/en-US/troubleshoot/windows-server/high-availability/groups-fail-logic-three-more-cluster-node-members But generally you are right - because Preferred Owners are no set failback will not occur

Selecting boxes on list of Preferred Owner is relevant! If nothing is selected in Preferred Owner frame in properties of clustered role it has meaning "Preferred Owners: Any node" - it is shown when you select clustered role in Failover Cluster Manager on title bar of middle-lower window. You can also aknowledge that there are no Preferred Owners are selected by using PS command: Get-ClusterGroup -Name App1 | Get-ClusterOwnerNode which shows following result: ClusterObject OwnerNodes ------------- ---------- App1 {} If you select box at Server2 you set this server as Preferred Owner (it can be more than one). Mentioned PS command will show: ClusterObject OwnerNodes ------------- ---------- App1 {Server2}

Incorrect. You would need to check the boxes in order to change the server order. If server 2 is moved up then this would take priority.
