Your network contains two VLANs for client computers and one VLAN for a datacenter. Each VLAN is assigned an IPv4 subnet. Currently, all the client computers use static IP addresses.
You plan to deploy a DHCP server to the VLAN in the datacenter.
You need to use the DHCP server to provide IP configurations to all the client computers.

You need to use the DHCP server to provide IP configurations to all the client computers. The subnet is 2 for clients!

Well, the question reads: "Your network contains two VLANs for client computers", not one VLAN for two client computers. :-) So, as far as I can see, you need one DHCP Relay Agent per subnet without a DHCP server. Two in total then.

And there's even Microsoft a source for it! https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/cc771390(v=ws.11) (Assuming that networking hasn't changed since Windows Server 2008 R2. :-) I think that's also what the Cisco source provided with the answer on the site implies. ("Repeat for every subinterface you have configured.")

it is saying to dhcp for client computers only (2 VLANs), not for servers. so why Box1 is 3? It should be 2.

Box 1: 2. You need a scope for each client subnet, but you don't need a scope for the datacenter subnet.

Box 1:2 box 2:2 You need to use the DHCP server to provide IP configurations to all the client computers. We need to create two DHCP address scopes. One scope for each subnet, that contains client computers. Because DHCPDISCOVER packets sent by the DHCP clients are transport within the local subnet only, we need to add a DHCP relay agent to each subnet that does not contain a DHCP server. The DHCP relay agent will react on the DHCPDISCOVER broadcasts within it's local subnet and will contact the configured DHCP server to retrieve an IP address for the client.

I disagree with your first response of 2 subnets, it should be 3. Whether datacenter vlan is dynamic/static assigned it requires a scope for IP assignment regardless.

Scopes: 2. You need a scope for each client subnet, but you don't need a scope for the datacenter subnet. DHCP relay agents: 2. One for each client subnet.

trick question. read it carefully. you don't need a scope for servers you need 2x scopes for 2x subnet clients. and 1 dhcp relay for each subnet (total =2) box1: 2 box2: 2

It's very confusing.If we think two vlans for clients and one for datacenter (only servers) it's 2 -2, but if we think that in datacetner could be clients it's 3-2.A standard environment is datacenter without clients, only servers, so I think 2-2

Box 1: 3 and Box 2: 2 You would need to create 3 DHCP scopes (1 for each VLAN) and 2 DHCP relays (1 for each VLAN that is not the datacenter VLAN, where the DHCP server is located). This is because the DHCP server needs to be able to provide IP configurations to all the client computers on all the VLANs, and the DHCP relays are needed to forward DHCP broadcast messages from the client computers on the non-datacenter VLANs to the DHCP server in the datacenter VLAN.

Hmm, I'd say 2 and 2. Yes there are 3 subnets, but the question states "Your network contains two VLANs for client computers..." - "You need to use the DHCP server to provide IP configurations to all the client computers..." It doesn't say you need DHCP addresses for the datacentre, only that you are deploying a DHCP server in the datacentre. So in theory it should be 2 scopes.

3 and 2 based on the folliwing article: Communication for DHCP lease generation uses IP broadcasts. Because IP broadcasts aren't routed, you need to configure a DHCP server on each subnet or configure a DHCP relay. Many routers include DHCP relay functionality.
